Information on Solomon Islands, Useful Links etc.
On this page the readers will find a number of various pieces of information pertaining to Solomon Islands in a form of links to various Internet sites in Polish and/or English. The links will also concern the subject-matter of this site as well as partner sites or interesting sites devoted to related issues. Finally, last but not least, there will be links concerning broadly understood information on Solomon Islands that could broaden or deepen knowledge on this fascinating and beautiful, but also murky, country.
However, before we continue to view the links, I would like to mention that strange things and mysteries connected with Solomon Islands are by no means limited to the four secrets discussed in this site. I will try to explain why.
First of all, because of its remoteness and the fact that in communities, tribes and villages situated in the deep jungle interior there still linger the vast majority of the same beliefs and customs as 100 or 200 years ago (as little back as 80-90 years ago some of the tribes practised ritual cannibalism, and killing the enemy - and possibly consuming his flesh/meat - was a way of transferring the vital force [mana] onto the warrior) - it is not difficult in Solomon Islands to consciously or - more frequently - unwittingly break a taboo, transgress some invisible and forbidden frontiers or barriers understood both in a literal, physical sense and in a figurative, mental or spiritual sense. Every researcher, explorer or investigator - as well as any tourist - who unconsciously, and even more so consciously breaks certain rules or laws is therefore potentially subject to certain sanctions or punishments. Depending on location, the severity of an offence and the forbearance of the natives, the sanctions may consist in a ban on entering a certain village or area, some redress in money or in kind etc. In extreme cases he or she will face a risk of losing their health or life. The taboo encompasses not just centuries-old customs but also certain topics which makes it sometimes difficult to glean any information or to obtain appropriate permits.
Secondly, after many Solomon Islands natives were forcibly removed from their country and transported to Australia and other countries as a slave or cheap labour force on plantations at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the trust of the locals towards white people has diminished. In the second half of the 20th century relations between local inhabitants and white people were further stigmatised by surveyors and geologists sent by overseas corporations looking for rich deposits of gold, diamonds and garnets. There are also unconfirmed rumours about oil deposits under the seabed west of Solomon Islands. There exist - also unconfirmed - theories according to which such a long presence of RAMSI (Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands) in the country, forces consisting mainly of military and civilian offices of Australia, but also of some other countries in the region, stems not only, and even not so much, from the necessity of keeping peace and quiet after bloody ethnic tensions (mainly between Guadalcanaleans and Malaitans) which took place in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, but also - or perhaps mainly - from their urge to get hold of the riches of the Solomons. If this is indeed the case, then to all the dangers and difficulties connected with breaking taboos and with climatic, natural and geographical conditions we would need to add the fact that any researcher, explorer or investigator could potentially be regarded - both by the natives and by the RAMSI forces - not so much as a person on the lookout for mysteries and adventures but rather as a treasure hunter.
We also need to get back for a while to the question of strange lights observed over some of the islands in the archipelago, especially over Guadalcanal and Malaita. One of the possible interpretations is that the lights in fact represent new, or simply unknown, military vehicles or craft. If so, then we are dealing with a completely different riddle, mystery and danger. We then need to pose a question about the reason why Australian, British and/or American troops - or perhaps RAMSI forces - station in secret bases in Solomon Islands. Is it about the development of new technologies far away from the nosey whites? Or is it about a potential co-operation of the army with other civilisations? Or perhaps about control over the deposits of oil, garnets, gold or diamonds? About the total government? Or maybe something completely different?
As we see, both potential dangers and the mysteries of the islands go far beyond the subject-matter of this site. We need to remember about them, though.
What we also need to remember about is that - without prior checking, possibly many times over - most of the things and information in Solomon Islands cannot be taken for granted. Tomorrow may mean in a week's time, and in an hour may mean in six hours. A plane may leave on time but it may be three hours late or not start at all. A ship is supposed to leave three times a week but actually only leaves once in a week, provided the crew (or passengers) are all on board or there is sufficient amount of fuel (the fuel issue is really interesting: it is one of the most expensive products in Solomon Islands while just a short distance offshore there may exist some of the richest oil reserves... One more riddle...)...
To sum up, it is worth remembering that in Solomon Islands nothing is, or at least nothing may be, as it seems...
